Why the studio feels the way it does

My Long Bay studio is comfortable on purpose.

I started piano at eight. My tutor was excellent. The room was a bare concrete box, and I never wanted to be in it.

So I kept what my tutor gave me, and changed the room. Mine is warm and relaxed, and students settle into it rather than sit through it.

It is a working studio as well. I record demos here, play through pieces, make beats and write songs.

Teaching is not a chore for me. It is the part of my week I look forward to.

Training

What I trained in

ABRSM Grade 8 in piano, Grade 5 Theory of Music passed with distinction, and studied toward a performance Diploma.

Every lesson is built around what the student wants to play, be it Mozart or Metallica. Piano, guitar, songwriting, and singing at beginner level. If you want a graded pathway I prepare students for ABRSM on piano and RSL Rockschool on guitar. Grades are optional.

I write and record my own music.

I played keyboard for a band called FENDS. I am not gigging at the moment, and that photograph is a few years old now. It is here because it is where learning an instrument can lead.

I hold a Diploma in Audio Engineering from SAE Institute, passed with an A+ average. I also interned at Roundhead Studios in New Zealand, on their Neve desk. That is not where I teach. Lessons are at my own studio in Long Bay.

Weekdays, 3:15pm to 7:30pm, at 24 Westerley Place, Long Bay, Auckland 0630. Street parking is about 20 metres from the door. $35 for half an hour, $70 for a full hour, invoiced monthly.

There is no free trial. The first lesson is a real lesson at the normal price, with no obligation to continue.
